As teachers, parents, and mentors of young people, we frequently find ourselves explaining what a particular reaction should have looked like, but we never take the time to explain how that reaction could have been achieved.
The answer is mindfulness.
Mindfulness is a simple but powerful technique to focus attention, manage emotions, handle stress, and resolve conflicts. Instead of simply telling youth to do these things, we can show them how, enabling the student to make wiser decisions in the heat of the moment.
We live in a fast-paced and high-stress world. Our culture places immense value on continuously remaining busy. This lifestyle fosters disconnected relationships and a high-pressure climate; the stress we experience is undoubtedly passed on to the young people we mentor. This stress impairs the effectiveness of our educational system and inhibits key parts of the brain that are necessary for daily learning and effective response to stimuli.
Anchored Change teaches a curriculum that brings improvements in concentration, attention, and empathy, all while building a climate of calm among students. Upon completion of the youth program, students will be empowered to stabilize attention, employ self-regulation, and understand and exhibit empathy.
Mindfully Anchored is a nonprofit public charity that focuses on spreading mindfulness through community service and activism.
Having a mind that is calm, focused, and empathetic allows students not only to increase their scholastic aptitude, but also to lead more satisfying, happier lives.

We are guided by a vision of our community as confident and kind people, adept at making mindful choices. We believe that the best way to achieve this future state is to start teaching the young people in our community and their community mentors to live mindfully in each moment now. By planting this seed early on, the youth of our community will have a solid foundation and be prepared to live thoughtfully throughout their lives.
Our mission is to both empower the youth of our community to use mindfulness in their lives, and equip adult leaders with the skills and knowledge necessary to teach mindfulness to those they impact. We aim to bring awareness and practice of mindfulness to our community; it takes a team of influential adults to truly empower young people and change our world!
A Note from
When I took on two young stepdaughters without having experienced being a mother before, then had two more children of my own, I quickly learned that parenting consists not only of teaching, but also of modeling favorable behavior. This is not an easy lesson to learn.
We live in a fast-paced and busy world. Our culture places immense value on this busyness. My kids were involved in multiple activities and I began to say "yes" to any inquiry about volunteering to help. We rushed everywhere and I felt like the words "hurry up" came thoughtlessly out of my mouth hundreds of times a day. We lived this way for a long time, and I thought I was doing right by my children, even though I found it extremely difficult to manage my stress level and patience.
Once there came a Saturday that we miraculously had free. I remember this Saturday distinctly because it was the first day that revealed an uncomfortable truth: I had no idea who my children were. I didn't know what to do with our day. I didn't know what they wanted to do. I had introduced my children to a lifestyle that did not foster actual connection.
After some self-reflection on the way I was managing my family, I realized that I was essentially teaching my children to lead a disconnected, high-pressure, stressful lifestyle. Something had to change. That something had to start with me.
That's when I discovered mindfulness. Adopting, developing, and practicing a mindful lifestyle has changed our lives. We've experienced positive development in areas such as gratitude, confidence, calmness, focus, patience, and overall happiness. Mindfulness has helped us learn to live in the present moment, appropriately managing stress. It has helped my children become more calm, focused, and prepared to excel scholastically. Furthermore, after three years of being medicated for ADHD, my daughter no longer takes medicine, but practices mindfulness regularly, and is excelling in school. Inspired by this journey, and especially inspired by my kids, I now teach mindfulness in schools independently, and I developed the Mindfully Anchored campaign, enabling others to do the same.
I encourage you to join the movement and experience for yourself the immense benefits of living a more mindful lifestyle!
